Born in Berlin, with ten he received a fuel cell  from his dad, sparking a strong interest in energy storage. He studies chemistry and physics in Maastricht, was part of a the BASF summer academy and the US National Institute of Health. He has been active in founding start-ups and as a student representative.

Simon Engelke was part of the 63. Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, where he also presented the Open-Access Journal Archive (in a panel with Nobel Laureates Ada Yonath, Brian Kobilka, Sir Harold Kroto and Deputy Scientific Director of NaWik Beatrice Lugger).

In fall 2013 he joined UC Berkeley for exchange and currently he is a Research Assistant at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and part of the Materials Project.
